Shwezigon Pagoda

Shwezigon Pagoda
One of the principal Buddhist monuments of Pagan (Bagan), said to contain relics from the body of Gotama Buddha. It was built during the reigns of Kings Anawrahta (r. 1044-1077) and Kyanzittha (r. 1084-1113). Its design anticipates later Burmese pagodas, including the Shwe Dagon. Apart from Buddhism, the Shwezigon is associated historically with veneration of the Thirty-seven Nats, statues of whom are found near the pagoda platform.
